About Us
RMIT enjoys an international reputation for excellence in professional and practical educational, applied and innovative research, and engagement with the needs of industry and the cities in which the university is located. One of Australia’s original educational institutions founded in 1887, RMIT is now the largest and most internationalised tertiary institution in Australia with a total student population of 75,000. RMIT offers doctoral, postgraduate, undergraduate and VET programs, enabling students to have the option of work-relevant pathways between vocational and higher education qualifications.
RMIT is a leader in technology, design, global business, communication, global communities, health solutions and urban sustainable futures. The university is ranked in the top ten among Australian universities — and third in Victoria — and in the top 100 universities in the world for engineering and technology in the 2012 QS World University Rankings. RMIT prides itself on the strong industry links it has forged over its 125-year history. Collaboration with industry is integral to the university’s leadership in applied research and education, and to the development of highly skilled, globally focused graduates. As a result, RMIT graduates are valued by employers around the world for their leadership skills and work readiness. All RMIT educational programs include work or clinical experience, industry projects, internships, and opportunities for overseas study and work placements, ensuring that graduates are equipped with the skills and insight that employers value in the ever-changing global economy. RMIT’s links with employers and universities across the world provide a passport for students and staff by enabling them to benefit from exchange, work placements, study or research in other countries. A range of scholarships is available to support education and research. RMIT has four research institutes (Design, Global Cities, Platform Technologies and Health Innovations) representing established areas of the university’s expertise. These institutes, together with other research groups in the university, are concerned with addressing the problems and needs of industry and communities world-wide. As part of a continuing $600 million capital investment program RMIT has recently completed several major projects, including the Design Hub and Swanston Academic Building , as well as refurbishments to the Emily McPherson Building and Francis Ormond Building. As a member of the Australian Technology Network of Universities, RMIT is on target to achieve a major commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the next 12 years. RMIT is also a Fair Trade University. For more information about RMIT, available programs and pathways visit www.rmit.edu.au/programs Institutional contacts
