Get more than a degreeMonash is a university that aims high, seeking to make a profound difference to the world and encouraging its students to do the same. In order to transform its ambition into positive change, Monash concentrates on several areas: An ambitious education for ambitious studentsKnowing it attracts some of Australia's most ambitious students, Monash has created numerous challenging programs that give participants the opportunity to study outside traditional academic settings, to volunteer, to travel the globe and to engage in research sooner. Through the university's Prato Centre in Tuscany, Italy, for example, the Faculty of Arts offers archaeology students the opportunity to participate in the excavations of an Etruscan and Roman site, uncovering artefacts that are over 2000 years old. Another example is the Faculty of Information Technology's industry-based learning program, which allows students to take part in 22-week placements with some of Australia's largest companies, including Origin Energy, KPMG and GE Capital. A global footprintMonash is the only Australian university active on four continents, with campuses in Australia, Malaysia and South Africa; an education and research centre in Prato, Italy; a joint research academy with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in Mumbai, India; the Southeast University–Monash University Joint Graduate School (Suzhou) in China; and a first-of-its-kind alliance with the University of Warwick in the UK. Beyond its bricks and mortar presence, Monash has significant partnerships with leading universities in North America, Europe, the UK, Africa and Asia. Monash believes that every student is an international student. They understand that, to offer students a path to exciting careers, a university must prepare globally engaged professionals. An annual New York Times survey of global CEOs on graduate recruitment once again rated Monash the best university in Australia and one of the world's top 32. Research with impactMonash uses ideas to help change communities for the better. Through strong investment in research, the university grows its knowledge and develops solutions to contemporary challenges. What Monash learns in research it feeds back into teaching, so students gain the skills they'll need to confront the problems of tomorrow. Making an impact where it mattersMonash seeks to understand the needs of the communities it seeks to serve. The university offers numerous outreach programs to ensure that it remains connected and relevant to these communities — and to society generally. On a global level, Monash has strong associations with some of the world's largest charity organisations. Through a close relationship with Oxfam Australia, it provides potentially life-changing volunteer opportunities for students in South Africa. One is the Monash Oxfam in South Africa Student Placement Program, which gives students a deeper awareness of the problems affecting people living with HIV and AIDS. It is a full four weeks of intensive, practical learning that includes placements with community-based organisations across the region. |
