Course Description
Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Modern nurses play an important role in health promotion, maintenance and education, as well as in traditional patient care and the restoration of health. The course introduces clinical practice together with the scientific basis of nursing, communication for practice, research skills and the role of the nurse in the health care system. Students develop nursing skills and relate all aspects of body function with nursing practice, and also explore complex health issues.

Structure
The course is highly structured and combines clinical practice with topics addressing ethics, law, psychosocial health, mental health, Indigenous health, evidence-based practice and the biophysical sciences. Clinical placements are undertaken during the course in agencies and hospitals throughout metropolitan and rural South Australia. Clinical placements include a combination of morning and evening shifts. Students gain clinical experience in various settings, allowing them to explore health issues through clinical reasoning and clinical practice.

Study Pathways
Enrolled Nurses who wish to become Registered Nurses may be granted credit for prior learning. Applications for credit transfer are administered through the individual Faculties on campus.
Comments
Before clinical placements students must provide a statement of fitness for practice, Police Clearance Certificate, and an up to date immunisation record. Students have the opportunity to combine this degree with the Bachelor of Health Sciences providing they meet the entry requirements for both degrees.
