This qualification is part of the Metal and Engineering Training Package. It is for people entering the metal and engineering industry in technical (non-trade) occupations such as CAD drafter, production scheduler, engineering assistant or similar roles. Students will gain compulsory competencies in organising and analysing information and in interacting with computing technology. They will also gain a range of elective competencies in areas relevant to current or intended employment such as CAD, drafting, quality assurance, basic fluid power, basic mechanical design, production scheduling, cost estimating and basic non-destructive testing.
Core: Organise and communicate information; Interact with computing technology. Electives: Perform computations; Work safely with ionizing radiation; Perform basic statistical quality control; Use hand tools; Set up basic hydraulic circuits; Set up basic pneumatic circuits; Apply mathematical techniques in a manufacturing engineering or related environment; Assist in the preparation of a basic workplace layout; Apply basic just in time systems to the reduction of waste; Develop recommendations for basic set up time improvements; Assist in the analysis of a supply chain; Use basic preventative maintenance techniques and tools; Undertake basic process planning; Use resource planning software systems in manufacturing; Use computer aided drafting systems to produce basic engineering drawings; Develop and manage a plan for a simple manufacturing related project; Prepare a simple production schedule; Undertake supervised procurement activities; Prepare a simple cost estimate for a manufactured product; Participate in quality assurance techniques; Perform basic penetrant testing; Perform basic magnetic particle testing; Perform basic eddy current testing; Perform ultrasonic thickness testing; Perform basic radiographic testing; plus more.

Electricians install, maintain, repair, test and commission electrical and electronic equipment and systems for industrial, commercial and domestic purposes. Electricians may also work on electrical transmission and distribution equipment.
Fabrication engineering tradespersons cut, shape, join and finish metal to make, maintain or repair metal products and structures.
They may produce moulds or patterns for metal castings, apply coatings and work with a variety of materials.
Mechanical engineering tradespersons carry out a range of mechanical work on machines, subassemblies and manufactured parts using a range of processes, tools and machines.
Non-destructive testing technicians examine and test the functionality and performance of an object or material in a way that will not affect its usefulness.
