"Architecture is a fascinating field that blends art and culture, science and technology and even elements of business. Unfortunately, for many, architecture courses don’t live up to their expectations. Graduates are typically less satisfied with their courses than those studying in other fields. In the 2010 national Course Experience Questionnaire survey graduates reported quite low levels of satisfaction with their teachers and with the skills they gained. Since graduates are required to do a form of internship after they complete their degrees, the majority (55 per cent in 2010) end up working for private practices. Employment prospects have improved slightly, with 26 per cent of graduates looking for work in 2010 (in comparison to 31 per cent in 2009). Over half of the architecture graduates in the class of 2009 went on to complete further study (51 per cent). Starting salaries are well below average, at just $35,085, but bear in mind that salaries go up once students are registered practitioners."
